The Joys of Junk Mail: Creative Ways to Use Junk Mail and Methods to Remove it.
82
I used to loathe junk mail. Every time I opened the mailbox and saw a ratty, full-color 4-page newspaper flyer advertising products and services that were more or less worthless, I would grit my teeth and furrow my brow; two actions that are now known to contribute to premature aging. I would experience a similar reaction to those promotional mass mailings where they can’t even get the spelling of your name right, or to those obvious trash letters addressed to “resident” or “occupant”.
Being the Green-minded Lotus that I fancy myself to be, I was doubly offended by all this needless waste of paper. It may be effective to stop the mailing of paper statements and invoices coming from your banks and vendors, but it’s quite another thing to try to quell the flow of junk mail.
I’ve spent many hours on the phone and the computer, trying to put a stop to the tsunami of unwanted paper, but my exhaustive efforts could only be likened to the unfortunate sailor trying to bail out his sinking boat with a tin cup. The old junk is soon replaced by new junk.
Although curb recycling helps, I have since discovered additional and more joyful ways to deal with junk mail.
A Joyful Prank
If you’ve gone through the traditional method of trying to stop junk mail and are fed up with the stuff that keeps on coming, remember you can send it back if the company has included a pre-stamped return envelope. Why not send them any one of your junk coupons in their own return mail envelope?...or just send them back their own blank form. I understand it costs them more than the regular postage if those pre-paid envelopes are returned. If you haven’t pulled a cool prank on anyone lately, it’s kind of fun. But what do you do with the other junk mail?
Begin Here
The first thing you need to do is to separate the glossy paper junk mail from the plain print junk mail. The glossy print works great for arts and crafts project, but the ink can be toxic if burned or ingested. Ingested, you say? Quite so, at least indirectly; so if you’re intrigued read on.
Junk Mail Makes Good Fertilizer
Talk about coincidence, junk mail has a lot in common with manure. It makes great garden mulch that’s rich in nitrogen. You wouldn’t want to use glossy print photos; however, since most of the toxic ink materials are in those ads. Junk mail mulch makes your flowers more floriferous and helps you save on soil and commercially prepared fertilizer.
I learned this handy recycling method from an eco-conscious gardener when I was directing an episode for HGTV.
For potted plants - Shred your non-glossy junk mail, mix it with some mulch (like peat moss) or potting soil and use it at the bottom quarter of the pot.
For general garden planting there are two methods – You can shred the paper and mix it with the soil and/or peat moss, then cover it with a top layer of soil.
The other method is to dig a big hole just to cultivate lovely junk mail mulch. Layer your junk mail and newspapers into the bottom of the hole. Cover with soil and wait several months for the mail to decompose. Then use the enriched soil as you would use compost. If you already cultivate a compost pile, you can add your unwanted mail to the mix. Just don't add any glossy paper.
Some gardeners use junk mail on top of the soil to prevent weeds from growing. The downside is that wet paper attracts grubs and snails so I don’t recommend it.
Get Your Seedlings Started with Junk Mail Pots
It’s fun to plant from seeds, but finding the ideal environment for cultivating your seedlings can be “iffy”. I recommend the Paper-Pot-Maker.It’s economically priced and it transforms those annoying direct mail penny-saver newspapers into lovely 3” pots, perfect for starting seedlings. You just wrap a strip of junk mail paper around the solid oak press, fold it under, twist into the base and voila!...you get plenty of little pots from one newspaper page. Plant them directly into the soil and the pots will decompose on their own.
More Joyful Junk Mail Metamorphos
Did you know that you can turn junk mail into bricks? You can with the
Newspaper Brick Maker. Unless you’re a little piggy, you won’t want to build your home out of junk mail bricks, but you certainly can heat your home with them! For about $30 Newspaper Brick Maker bricks burn just like real wood; so throw another brick-o-junk on the fire and get out the marshmallows.

Crafty Junk Joy for the Whole Family
If you’re feeling artistic why not make your own handmade recycled paper? The whole process is relatively simple. You’ll need to gather or purchase some uncomplicated equipment and supplies. Equipment includes a blender or hand mixer to make the paper pulp and window screening and a wooden frame to make the mold. You’ll also need a tub large enough to entirely submerge the frame and some squares of white or cream-colored felt or flannel fabric. You’ll also need a wooden block or rolling pin to help press water out of the new paper.
Sound too complicated? You can purchase a very easy-to-use kit on Amazon. Recycled paper-making kits won’t take up your entire garage or workroom and it's great fun for the entire family. The blender isn’t included in the kit so I recommend using an old one or purchasing one second-hand just to be used for this purpose. You wouldn’t want to get bits of paper caught in your teeth every time you drink a milkshake.
Hand-made paper can be quite lovely and you can use it for greeting cards, decorations or other art projects. You may even become inspired to sell your paper on-line.
Mosaic Paper Art
If you feel that papermaking just leaves you with more paper, try another artistic venture –Mosaic Paper Art.
Start with a drawing you created or use a favorite photo or magazine illustration. Cut up your junk mail into small squares and sort them by color and texture. Then select the squares as you would select paint color and paste them onto your drawing or photo. Use a thin, dry glue – like a glue-stick, suitable for paper so the whole thing doesn’t get too lumpy. It’s a fun arts and crafts project for the whole family. Some people have even become professional mosaic artists. Here’s a great site that will get you started.
More Uses For Junk Mail
I used to say that the junk mail news ads were only good for lining the bird cage. I was wrong! Tear it up and it’s also good for lining the hamster or bunny rabbit’s cage! Your chickens will love it too. Just don’t use any glossy paper. Save that for making Decoupage boxes.
Discover Decoupage!
Decoupage is a great craft. You apply paper pictures and photos to items such as mugs, wooden boxes, handbags, furniture, or any object with a solid surface. The results can be exquisite or just plain adorable. If there are great photos or illustration found within your junk mail, cut them out and use it for your decoupage collage.
Here’s how to make a Decoupage box.

Eco-Packing
Shredded or crumpled junk mail makes great packing material. You can even use it to wrap dishes and glassware. Just remember to wash your dishes after you unpack! If you are using the crumple method and your package is being mailed, make sure your junk mail packing doesn’t include any personal identity information.
Learn the Japanese art of Origami
Why not turn your junk mail into cute paper animals or a beautiful flowers?. Once you’ve mastered this simple art, you can fill the void in your space with an Origami mobile! It’s all good Feng Shui especially since you're also helping the environment.

I am so impressed. I can't believe the creative ways you offer to use junk mail. I receive enough junk mail to fertilize my entire lawn.:)
voted up and very useful
I cannot believe how I have been wasting all my junk mail, Hillary, when I could have been turning it into fertilizer, mulch-mix, bricks, artistic mosaics, decoupage, origami and such. Thank you for providing this information just in time. Particularly like the idea of remailing all those unbelievable offers back to the senders. I know they will be thrilled!
I can just see some young entrepreneur right now, collecting the neighborhood junk mail, and selling junk mail fire wood bricks from the front yard.
Excellent stuff :-)
Here's to a floriferous garden! I am really interested in trying out some of these ideas.
Wonderful hub!
Oh, I see. The title intrigued me because why would someone find joy in junkmail? But I guess for those who likes prank, that would give them a bit of joy.
At first I thought the title referred to email junk mail. Harder to prank with email.
What a beautiful magnificent wonderful option to junk mail, I like you went through all the anxs you spoke of and I missed the episode on recycling junk mail for planting and garden needs.
Great research and very much appreciated. :) Katie
I may even look forward to receiving junk mail now. LOL Thanks for such a fun and useful hub!
Great hub Lotus!! Very entertaining! The worst company that I have come across for catalogs is Victoria's Secret...I can't seem to get off of their mailing list!! I'm about ready to threaten to cut up my credit card with them if they don't stop sending me a new sales catalog every week!
I will put them to good use...thanks to you :)
Great ideas. Having the No Junk Mail notice on the letter box gets rid of some as you say, but its the other stuff they sneak into the newspaper and the posted stuff. Have always wanted to make a paper brick - must get on to it! Thanks for all the interesting ideas.
This so creative Green Lotus. I do love Mod Podge and have made some great things using old pitures & cards, ect. but it never ocurred to me to use junk mail! But why not? Thumbs up - Your'e the best!
Hi, your a genius! I was wondering how to pot my little plants, and I never knew it could be used for fertilizer, great stuff! cheers nell
In case anyone was wondering this answers the question: how green can you get.
Another winner G_L off to create some mulch.
When you see it's junk mail in the envelope (if it's in an envelope), simply write 'return to sender' on it, and the company can get their own back (literally)...
Excellent ideas! I've done the 'mail-them-back-their-own-junk' trick lots of times in the past...I also do it with those annoying stacks of postcards to sign up for this or that, that fall out of magazines. Sometimes, I'd save a whole stack of postcards, and stick them (still blank, of course) all into a single envelope and mail it to whomever..thier own products or not!
Sadly, the mailers have gotten wise: the postcards now require postage, and the envelopes have either disappeared entirely, or require postage. It was fun while it lasted.
Currently, I toss most of the junk into the curbside recycle, with the exception of anything containing my name and address...such as the covers of catalogs. These go through my office cross-cut shredder, and becomes packing material for my ceramics. It beats non-biodegradable styrofoam 'peanuts.'
(But when I receive a package with 'peanuts,' I re-use them and send along a note asking the recipient to do likewise.)
You have some great and fun-sounding ideas, here...I'm just short on energy. LOL
you can write down the URL for the ad, though, and go to it directly from the address bar.... ;-) That will keep you out of trouble ...
Wow - Just love this hub! Leave it to you Green Lotus to come up with all of these creative and fun ways to use junk mail. And now, I am waiting for the junk mail that I can return...urrrrrrrhg. Really will enjoy doing this. OK...bring on the junk mail! :)
Nice article.
nice work.
back many years ago, you could tape those postpaid return envelopes to a brown paper wrapped brick and REALLY cost the junk mailer some postage. the postal regs have changed since then, but stuffing the return envelope full of all the junk mail it can hold is still OK.
I like to draw the triangle-arrows recycle symbol on the envelope, with the phrase
"support the postal service by recycling junk mail: SEND IT BACK!"
I figure since the USPS is becoming financially insolvent, it's because they give bulk mail rates to the junk mailers, and the amount charged doesn't cover the costs of delivery. Thus sending back return envelopes made as heavy as possible helps support the USPS by forcing the junk mailers to help pay a fairer share of the cost of junk mail.
Ha ha ha love the prank ideas! Also, the nifty planter pots. I think I can just mash my own with some of the kitchen gadgets I have on-hand. I have a fun hub on recycling my junk mail too you may want to check out. Love your writing style ;)
Hahaha! I enjoyed this GL!
Most of the time I put my junk mail together with the newspapers and sell them to recycling shops. There is usually somebody who comes around buying our old newspapers.
I like your prank ideas though!
Love this so much! I have so much junk mail all the time, making the lovely paper would be good for greeting cards of even Christmas maybe. The paper pots are another terrific idea, love it!!
Yeah how about that junk mail! They really need to get a life! I never read it! I just know they trying to get my money number 1, less its bills, or something I ordered, or friendly mail, I dump it. How many trees do we kill just for the sake of advertisement! :(
Very True Green Lotus!
Wow, that's great! I recycle all my junk mail or use the back of blank pages for printing or envelopes for lists before recycling.... Great hub. I like being green. You've got a new follower!
Hillary ~ You covered many great recycling ideas for junk mail. I save for packing material when needed and collect some to let the kiddies draw with crayons all the scribbles they like and also shred for the garden mulch. Blessings, Debby
