The Twelve Spiritual Laws of Groucho Marx
77A Very Concise Biography
Woody Allen called him “the greatest comedian this country has ever produced". Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx, was born Oct 2nd 1890 in New York City. Although Groucho’s career began as a singer, he soon became know as a master of wit, particularly for his clever one-liners.
Groucho Marx made 26 movies, 13 of them with his brothers Chico and Harpo. The Marx Brothers' wildly funny feature films, today rank as film classics. Later in life, Groucho had a successful solo career as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive hunched walk, ever-present cigar, heavy greasepaint moustach and eyebrows became the classic “Groucho” persona.
The Guru in Groucho
It’s been said that there’s a close relationship between great humor and the truth. What’s truthful isn’t necessarily humorous, but what’s humorous is sure to contain a modicum of truthfulness. When you look at it objectively, it's easy to see that funny stuff is simply the truth imbued with positive energy and a healthy dose of the rhythm of life, in essence, great comic timing.
So with humble apologies to Deepak Chopra, author of one my favorite books, “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success”, I present my “Groucho” hypothesis:
• Study the subject’s classic one-liners in analogy with quotations from some of the world’s greatest philosophers, teachers, theologians, and scientists and one may observe a curious relatedness between the artist’s comic quips and the wisdom of the universe.
1- Attributed to Schrodinger, Bohr and Einstein: “The Quantum Soup is an expression for the linking of all matter and energy in the universe; the universe is an ocean of connectivity.”
Groucho: “If I hold you any closer, I'll be in back of you.”
2- Carl Jung: “I simply believe that some part of the human Self or Soul is not subject to the laws of space and time.”
Groucho: “You remind me of you… your eyes, your throat, your lips, everything about you reminds me of you... except you. How do you account for that?”
3- Unknown Philosopher: “You can avoid having ulcers by adapting to the situation: If you fall in the mud puddle, check your pockets for fish.”
Groucho: “My brother thinks he's a chicken - we don't talk him out of it because we need the eggs.”
4- Confucious: “Humility is the solid foundation of all the virtues”.
Groucho: “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.”
5- Einstein: “There is no time; time is in the mind."
Groucho: “Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.”
6- Epicurus: "Death is nothing to us, since when we are, death has not come, and when death has come, we are not."
Groucho: “This man is either dead or my watch has stopped."
7- Ray Bradbury: "Living at risk is jumping off the cliff and building your wings on the way down".
Groucho: "If you fall out of that window and break both your legs, don't come running to me".
8- The Masonic Order: “Discover the lost word and find enlightenment”
Groucho: “Say the secret word and win 100 dollars”.
9- Dwight D. Eisenhower: “We are going to have peace even if we have to fight for it.”
Groucho: “Military Intelligence is a contradictory of terms”
10- Deepak Chopra: "You can free yourself from aging by reinterpreting your body and by grasping the link between belief and biology."
Groucho: “I intend to live forever, or die trying.”
11- The Dalai Lama: "It is possible to have compassion without attachment"
Groucho: “I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception”.
12- Abraham Lincoln: "A person will be just about as happy as they make up their minds to be."
Groucho: “Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it! Those are my principles. If you don’t like them, I have others”.
A Classic Scene from "Duck Soup"
If you've never seen a Marx Brothers movie, "Duck Soup" is the perfect introduction to Groucho, Chico, and Harpo (and even Zeppo). The 1933 movie, is a tremendously satire on politics and war with Groucho as the wise-cracking Rufus T. Firefly, dictator of the small nation Freedonia. The country is in financial crisis, so Rufus shrewdly woos the the wealthy, wide-eyed Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont) into becoming its benefactor. When the leader of the neighboring Sylvania decides he's in love with Mrs. Teasdale, Firefly declares war.
There's a true story that the village of Fredonia, in upstate New York wrote to Paramount and asked the studio to remove all references in the film to Freedonia because "it is hurting our town's image". Groucho fired back a sarcastic reply asking them to change the name of their town because "it's hurting our picture".

I imagine it was a tremendous amount of work. Fine job. My favorite Groucho comment was spoken when interviewing a contestant on You Bet Your Life. HE asked the woman how many kids she had and she replied 8 ( or some ungodly number like that) and he looked stunned...he said " wow...that is an awful lot of kids" and she replied, yes, my husband loves me very much, to which Groucho shot back " I love my cigars too but I take them out of my mouth every once in a while"!
Hehehehe So cool...being witty does give a twist to life! I like that! LOL Congratulations for your Hubnugget Nomination Green Lotus! Join us in the Hubnuggets Ship and see the pirates in action. Vote and promote your hub! http://hubpages.com/_hubnuggets10/hub/X-Marks-The-
The Marx Brothers and Groucho in particular were hilarious.
Brings back a lot of memories. Back in my teens, we had a group that would get together whenever one of their movies would air. Even if it was 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning. Great Hub! Another fave were the Three Stooges. LOL
What a wonderful way to show the genius of GM by mirroring his quips with those of other great but less comedic minds. Anyone can blurt out some obscure observation but to do it in a way that makes people laugh is, in my humble and often disregarded opinion, genius. You did a great job on this my little green friend.
You've assembled some of my all time favorite movies and quotes, here! A very well written hub about a true comedic genius! I just had to vote for A Night At The Opera, by te way.
im going to have to watch nite at the opera now. awesome hub green locus. peace.
You really delivered Green Lotus, the title was enticing and the content even more so. You even had me searching for "the lost word" which I will be going back to right after I vote your Hub for hubnugget. Kudos to you, I think I'm going to be a fan despite the zygostatical nature of my critique (lost word) Nostrovia! Ben
I personally think you have a book idea here!
Maybe "The Tao of Groucho Marx"...?
I think you should go for it!
Most excellent. Hope you win the Hubnugget contest this week. You deserve it!
What a fresh topic and take. Congrats on your HubNuggets nomination.
Hilarious! I'm sharing it on Face Book! :)
Excellent hub, congrats on the hubnugget nomination!
Congratulations, HubNugget! - This was a well-thought out Hub that was very entertaining. Write on!
Groucho is definitely one of my all-time favorite comedians, as he is for another one of mine, Woody Allen. Groucho was certainly quick with the bon mot. In one of their movies, somebody cried, "That's irrelevant!" and Groucho retorted, "No, it's a rhinoceros!" Didn't he? I think that happened. Later!
It's been said that the more complex the mind the greater the need for play
So the next time someone thinks your just playing ,remind them of this saying.
You've probably heard the saying "a stich in time saves nine." Nine what? cats lives?
Abraham Lincoln liked to make light of his opponents attacks on him
One opponent boasted of his activity as a congressman in his district and was using his experiance as a congressman to show his credentials as a presidential candidate as opposed to Lincoln 's whereupon Lincoln used this mans attack against him by saying that because his opponent was so very good at his job as congressman ,that the voters of his district should vote to keep him there rather than send him to the white house.Lincoln was a very clever as well as a funny man at times ,not unlike Groucho Marx.,but without the vaudville routine.
My take on my brother, who thinks he knows everything,if that's the case then why is it nobody listens to you? Remember Humility is the foundation of all the virtues
Einstein said there is no time ;time is in the mind; Some say past present and future are all one timeline; connected .by a single or a series of timelines or dimentions that are all connected in one way or another similtaniously and only seemingly broken up as our physical bodies die while our soul lives on as Epicurus said;death is nothing to us ;this is in line with that concept.
Of course entertainment was also used by those who wanted to distract or placate the masses from war and government activities and pressing social issues.
Very well done The owners of the publishing rights are loving it;I'm sure.
I remember Groucho Marx from "black and white tv" days. You brought back a lot of memories. Thanks!
Great hub, so many to decide from, but you're in the running for sure.
Your hub was funny and true. Thanks and congrats!
I just discovered you and I'm now an instant fan. This hub was so clever, for a moment I thought I had written it.
Groucho: “Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.”
Love it! Seen nearly all his films.
Fav of all time: There ain't no such thing as a Sanity Clause.
loved this hub, very funny and nicely put together
Great Job!
"No, No, No, Thank You"
Your hubs are life-affirming and very exciting - where else can I find Groucho Marx and 'small-breasted' women - wow - what an unbeatable combination!!!
You've just sold another subscription!
I laughed all the way through that awesome list of comparisons and then made my wife listen to me reading them all over again, including the Freedonia thing.
Just joy, joy, joyful reading. Thanks!!!
That was definitely very cool Green Lotus. Thank you. :) It made for great reading. :)
Wow well done.... Your quotes, his cigar, moustashe and eyebrows reminded me of my mother's sister.... Good Hub.
What a clever, funny story, wonderfully put together. I don't know how I missed it. On second thought, yes I do. I am a chump! :-)
Terrific hub, sadly you did not quote popeye the sailor man, who by rights has some good nuggets worthy of this hub. Never the less as always good reading with Green Lotus and thought inspiring. Thank you F.
Only that they are both philosopher's from the same era. If you think about the things that Popeye says one could not argue that he was not a guru of his time. If you were going for Groucho specific, then why quote Lincoln & Eisenhower or even Depak Chopra. In my view Popeye is more closely related to Groucho than any of the others. In your own words "It’s been said that there’s a close relationship between great humor and the truth." Sorry if you did not appreciate my comment. Are you still confused?
This one could have been written by Groucho for Popeye. "Children. They're just smaller versions of us you know, but I'm not so crazy about me in the first place, so why would I want one of them?"
Like the club that would have him as a member.
Just one of many, perhaps I should jump this thread and try to emulate your efforts with Popeye. Inspiration comes from the strangest places.
Thanks for your patience with my comments I must seem silly or dim witted, I apologize for that and will be a bit more discerning with my comments. Cheers F.
