How to Curb Your Worrying

By Green Lotus

You've heard of the term "Curb Your Enthusiasm"? Besides being one of the funniest shows on television, it's a common colloquialism that means ‘stop acting so manic and get your enthusiasm under control’. Frankly, I think being overly enthusiastic is fine; in fact, it’s most probably good for you. It has to be more healthful than being overly worrisome.

Most of us find it difficult to put our worries aside. After all, you can’t turn your worries off as you would a light fixture with a light switch. It would certainly feel great if we could give up worrisome thoughts with ease and without feeling guilty. We’d all have more energy for doing more constructive things in our lives and we’d feel a lot better too.

Have you ever imagined yourself without worries? Even if you’ve only been able to do it for an instant, you know the sudden feeling of relief, perhaps even exhilaration. But how do you make it stick?

Don’t Stop Thinking – Just Stop Worrying

It’s been said that the best way to stop worrying is to stop thinking about your worries. But how do you stop thinking about something? If I said to you, “Don’t think about puppy dogs”, I’m sure you’d start to think about them. It’s human nature - and it’s human nature to worry about problems and negative situations...even imagined negative situations.

A Little Focus Pokus Works

I think that if we focus our attention on something, it increases in importance and value. On the other hand, if we ignore something, it goes away or ceases to have much meaning in our lives; just like magic.

If we didn’t focus on our goals, visualizing our dreams; taking positive action in that direction, we wouldn’t remain on the path to success for very long. Focusing on our worries works the same way.

Why Do YOU Worry?

Our minds are always trying to work out solutions to our problems and we often do so even before they happen.

Solving problems in our head, or being prepared for an upcoming snowstorm or a “rainy day” is smart, but I’ve known people who worry about less predictable events because they think it’s only natural to do so; what’s more, they believe it is necessary to do so.

Some people even think it’s noble to worry. A lot of parents are like that! They think that if they didn’t worry about their children all the time (even when there’s nothing wrong), they wouldn’t be good parents. OK, perhaps it's not fair for me to judge, since I’ve never had children of my own, but I do feel bad for both parent and child in such a situation.

Now Is the Time To Curb Your Worrying

Worrying and problem solving are both mental activities; both begin in your head, but the worrying won’t dissipate unless you do something positive.

Start by Distinguishing Between a Real Problem and a Perceived Problem

This is an important key to curbing your worrying. It will help you to lessen your anxiety and will improve the chances of achieving your goals.

You can start by asking yourself whether the worrisome event is happening now, or whether it might happen. You may think it's happening now, like a family member is in surgery, or your buddy was sentenced to do time in prison, but you're really worried about the consequences of those events. Worrying is always about the future. Can you determine the course of future events? Yes, sometimes you can, but worrying is not one of the ways. Thinking negative thoughts can actually work against you.

Start thinking less about the worry and more about things you can do, or people you can enroll to lessen the worry. Making a positive contribution makes you feel less helpless.

If that’s truly not possible, or if you’re just too worried to act or things seem beyond your control, just think positively. It doesn’t cost you anything and you have nothing to lose except your worries. The mind is very powerful and there are many people, myself included, who believe in the power of positive thinking. If you need help getting started I've included a few helpful articles in the right column.

Here are some very helpful books that will help you become less anxious and more positive.

Change the Way You Think

Another way to stop worrying is by changing your perception of the problem. If a problem isn’t worrisome then it stops being a problem.

If we choose to let it be, and acknowledge that everything is happening for a reason yet unknown, we can relax. Believing that something perceived as “wrong” may actually be something "right" is very powerful and liberating. I’ve had friends who were devastated over of a failed relationship, only to discover that it opened the door to a far more satisfying one.

The next time you start worrying, come back to this Hub and read this list out loud:

A- Worrying drains your emotional energy and sends your anxiety levels soaring, so you are less likely to act positively and effectively.

B- Worrying about things that only ‘might” happen causes stress in the lives of other people, including those about whom you worry.

C- Nothing bad is happening now and the future hasn't happened yet.

D- Statistically, whatever you are worrying about will never happen.

E - You can almost always use physical preparedness, as in the above mentioned snowstorm scenario.

F- Despite what chronic worriers think, worrying is not a positive solution to a problem. It HAS NO EFFECT on preventing or solving problems, nor does it prepare you for the worst.

G- If you want to feel more in control, change your fearful thinking into fearless thinking. Sending out positive thoughts has been known to be effective in shaping future events. If you believe that, you better believe that sending out negative thoughts and visualizing the worst is just as powerful, so stop it!

H- Lessen your anxiety by quieting your mind through meditation. If you need help, there are now computer programs that teach you to unwind, relax and meditate.

I – If all else fails, seek counseling or talk to your family doctor.

J - If you enjoy worrying, never mind.

How Common is Chronic Worrying?

If you are a chronic worrier, you’re not alone. A 2007 study conducted at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute, Inc. revealed that Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is as common as depression.

Try the above suggestions or talk to your doctor or to a counselor. You owe it to yourself and to your family not to let worries get in the way of your health, happiness and success.

A great hub with valuable information Green Lotus. Worrying unnecessarily can cause serious problems if not treated.

I really like this hub and totally agree with you when you said: "I think being overly enthusiastic is fine; in fact, it’s most probably good for you. It has to be more healthful than being overly worrisome."

Good tips. I find that, in most cases, writing helps me to stop worrying...I become totally immersed in the topic and forget about what's bothering me.

I'm in this learning curve....and it's pretty steep...changing habits entrenched over 60+ years is tough.

Both my parents were professional and somewhat irrational worriers.

For example--my dad wouldn't get me a bicycle until I was 12. His reasoning? "Some drunk might drive up on the sidewalk and hit you."

At the time, I didn't really think that was a good reason, but as a child, my brain back then couldn't come up with, "Well, duh--if a drunk drives up on the sidewalk, I wouldn't have to be on a bike to get hit, now, would I?!!"

Changing this pattern is tough, but I'm working on it...

Great hub--voted up!

Excessive worrying is a terrible habit and one which many need not suffer if only they were taught early on in their lives how to control fear and worry.

We do need to be aware and concerned about things in our lives but concern should be proportionate to the importance or risk that a certain event holds. If worry is disproportionate then one is going to worry themselves to an early grave. That's the problem with our society now, people do worry too much and the government doesn't help either. The latter just propagate people's fear, I could give you the example of the 'terror' war in this case.

It is always a good time to stop our worrying because it will lead to our own demise and there will be no surprise when we're pushing up flowers six feet under!

Excellent thoughts and thanks for sharing.

God bless and peace.

Hi Rhonda - Staying positive is a great way to chase those worries away. So many of the things that worry us eventually turn out to be blessings in disguise. Thanks for the visit.

carrie- worrying is toxic to both you and those you worry about. Staying focused and positive is the key. Glad you enjoyed this one and found it of value. Cheers.

alek - What a great suggestion! Writing helps me stay focused on what I enjoy too. Thanks for the visit :)

Lizzy - Parents can teach us a lot...including how to worry! As for being over 60, there are advantages. As we age we tend to forget things that aren't really important. Happens to me all the time!

richtwf - Hello and a belated Happy New Year! You are right about the government and the media always promoting terror, doom and gloom. If it bleeds, it leads unfortunately.

Chronic worrying is, as you say, a bad habit that needs to be addressed. I believe it is really a form of depression and can be treated the same way.

Thank you for your kind personal words and peace to you and yours.

Great list of strategies for those who worry, Hillary. I try not to worry two days in every week. One day is yesterday and the other day is tomorrow.

Remember the book, "Don't sweat the small stuff." Go that one better and tell yourself it is all small stuff. :)

Jai - I don't know anyone who doesn't worry sometime and it sounds like you've got it under control. Working out is one of the best ways to forget your worries. So is dancing!

drbj - What a clever plan! Now all you have to do is only worry about what's going to happen today. It cuts down on a lot of worries :)

I do remember that book and will add it to list above. cheers!

This is awesome, I just took a young person to the emergency room last night who was having a panic attack. This was sad, as she really thought there was something horribly wrong with her. We talked about how to stop worrying and this is a blessing to find the day after. I will forward it to her. Good stuff! :) Katie

Very positive. I've a friend that always says, "don't sweat the petty stuff; and don't pet the sweaty stuff."

LOL!

Really, I know that if I am worrying about something, all that that means is that I should be doing something about that thing. I should be proactive in those situations, rather than inactive with worry.

Excellent advices!

On the beginning, worrying seems to be exciting to the people (it keeps adrenalin up), maybe that is one of the reasons many become addicted to it?

It is always nice to be reminded why worrying is so useless - thank you for amazing article.

Tatjana - So good to see you here. I think you're right. There's a "payback" for worrying, getting angry, even constant complaining. Sometimes it strokes their ego, sometimes it's just exciting. I do know people who get a charge every time they describe how bad they feel. :)

GL,

My philosophy has always been to determine if something I'm worrying about is in or out of my control. If it's out, there's nothing I can do about it so let it go. It's not real. If it's in my control it's not a worry...it is something to deal with, and dealing with a problem always resolves it. Hence, no worry. Sadly I know how difficult this actually is to live by! But I always try to live it.

Great hub. Thanks.

DG - You are right and I remember you telling me this once before. I love to ride and practiced through my early adulthood. Today, the opportunity rarely presents itself. What stops me is that now I have to pay for it instead of my parents :( One day that will change. Thanks!

Hi, you certainly have some great ideas here, and I do agree with you about the fact that the more we worry the more bigger and important it becomes, so we must try and ignore it, and meditation is a great way to do this, the only trouble is with me, is that if I tell myself not to worry, there is a niggling little voice in the back of my head that always says, the second you will stop worrying, that horrible thing will happen, only by holding onto the worry, are you keeping it at bay! if someone could help me with that bit, I would be really grateful! lol cheers nell

It is the minds job to find solutions to problems. Our challenge is to not get too caught up in the thinking. Our minds scroll through past data that is available to find solutions.
