New, Effective Ways to Remember Things and Improve Memory Skills
76
Being “memory smart” is enviable. If you’re still young and in school, having a good memory is easily equated with being smart because studying is a no-brainer. If you’re an older adult, having a good memory makes you seem younger to others and of course makes you feel younger and more in control of your life. But it really doesn’t matter how old you are, for most of us maintaining a good memory takes a bit of effort.
There have been many traditional methods for sharpening your memory including eating a balanced nutritious diet, getting enough sleep, exercising, doing brain teaser games like Suduko and learning word/picture association techniques. (You know, Bill Smith has a nose like a billiard ball and smells like a blacksmith…or something of that nature).
Recent studies; however, are showing even more effective memory enhancing techniques.
Something new….Test Yourself
When you go to a party or a meeting that (thankfully) doesn’t make you wear a “hello my name is” badge, remember to test yourself. Rather than playing the association game, play the quiz game. Of course the trick is to test yourself right away (before you forget). So, if you’ve just met Bernard, say “Hi Bernard, nice to meet you”. If he just happens to look like a St. Bernard, all the better. Later, when you spot him across the room, test yourself on remembering his name.
Do the same with dates and shopping lists. When you enter a date onto your calendar, test yourself on the entry a minute or so later and then several times before the due date. Do the same with shopping lists. They’re more challenging, but just as effective in helping you to develop a stronger memory. When you’re at the supermarket, try to recall a few items in your head before you check that list.
Heard a funny joke? Share it until it becomes second nature. You’ll use the same memory path as when you test yourself, so when the opportunity arises you'll be less likely to be the only one at the party who can’t share a joke because nothing comes to mind.
I hope you're remembering all this because there's a pop quiz after the hub ☺
Sharpen Up those Memory Paths
Tests were conducted at the University of Washington and at Duke University that showed taking a test can more than triple a person’s recall over studying the material. Students who gave themselves pop-quizes on an upcoming exam did better than those who studied in the traditional way of reading and re-reading their notes and materials. When you regularly test yourself, the brain stores your test answers in places more accessible to you than if you had just “studied” whatever it is you want to recall.
The trials also showed that even if you have forgotten something within minutes, the act of trying to recall it, exercises an important part of the brain associated with strengthening memory.
Why Do We Forget?
There has been a lot of research over the past few years to study why our memory deteriorates with age. Severe memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s Disease is now believed to be triggered by inflammation in the brain. Most recently, the CD45 molecule found in the brain has been shown to help clear harmful toxins that lead to inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers at the University of South Florida's Department of Psychiatry and the Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair is working with Natura Therapeutics, Inc. to screen for natural compounds that may target CD45 activation in the brain's immune cells. Green tea has been found to be one of those compounds and the University is testing it extensively. It’s comforting to learn that serious research is being conducted into the effectiveness of natural products. Hopefully it will get publicized before the big pharmaceutical companies get hold of the information.
Natura Therapeutics is testing other natural anti-oxidants such as blueberries, also believed to reduce the inflammation associated with Alzheimer’s and memory loss.
Eating a nutritious balanced diet is good for the gray matter, and chosing antioxidants is great for memory support.
Here are some foods that are high in antioxidants.
If you can, buy the organic variety for higher potency.
- celery
- green pepper
- thyme
- perilla*
- chamomile tea
- carrots
- olive oil
- peppermint
- rosemary
- oregano
- almonds
*If you’re unfamiliar with perilla, it’s an ornamental herb that’s attractive in both in the garden and on the plate. Called "Shiso" (Japanese basil or mint) in Asian cooking, the leaves smell like lemon balm. The flavor is a combination of parsley, cilantro, and cumin with a hint of cinnamon. Add it to salads or sprinkle it on fish. Both flowers and leaves are edible and together they make a fragrant tea.

Thank you, Hillary, for this interesting hub. You reminded me how important it is to use mnemonic (memory) techniques to remember facts that are significant in your life. I may even write about the subject . . . if I can remember the techniques.
Definately correct. Studies have shown that the act of practicing memory retrieval is a key in solidifying one's memory. I wrote about this in the SQ3R learning technique: http://hubpages.com/t/179093
I associate blueberries as brainberries and try to eat them whenever I can. I already drink green tea.
Decreasing inflammation is good for the body in general.
I'll have to buy some more green tea tomorrow! I've never been into the games like Sudoko, etc., but I do like to play memory board games and use visual cues. I like how you pointed out to challenge our memories and test them. I think the more we use our mental faculties, the stronger they become. I guess we can call it mental calisthenics. I liked the quiz without multiple choice! ;)
Thanks for this work....Our memory needs training like a muscle.
Thanks so much for this great information. I know when I used to drink a lot of Pepsi and sweets, I did not think as clearly. I will use more of the foods you mention here.
This is awesome Green Lotus! I didn't cover any of this, like the brain foods, and remembering names? Forget it, I love name tags. Thank you-Thank you! I need all the help I can get!
Amen to that GL. I no longer drink soda at all. Thinking a lot clearer. Also drinking a lot of water. I hear proper hydration is important to keep the brain functioning well. It is mostly water.
I'm at that age when I need it, GL :D
Very comprehensive, informative hub, thank you!
This was valuable information. Thanks for writing this. We need this to maintain our memory. I'll bookmark this one. Rated up!

I forgot what I was going to say, but it had something to do with how great this hub is. Thanks for sharing such great information. Rated up and useful.
Hi, I did have to go back to check out a few answers to your questions! but then again it is half eleven at night so I forgive myself! I loved the remark about 'if he looks like a St, Bernard all the better' lol I did actually cover this in psychology, I took night school and we had to do brain training, the look of horror on peoples faces when we were given a tray of goods and told we had 30 seconds to remember them was very funny, but after being told the secrets on how to do it, it certainly improved our way of thinking. my memory got a lot better, in fact I can still remember the 'shopping list' that they told us to memorise. if you tell it as a story, then all the goods string together. for example a girl is carrying a huge tomato down the garden and trips over a garden fork. the tomato and fork are on the list. it really does work, I will bookmark this as I know I will forget some of the ingredients needed to improve my memory! as long as I remember where I put the bookmark!
I also enjoyed reading all of your accomplishments on your link to your site. Fascinating reading. cheers nell
Hey GL, I am so glad to learn that I have been exercising my memory muscles by trying to recall something I have forgotten. If that is a true test of mental muscle tone I think most of the country is in superb shape because we're all trying to recall all the time. I'm trying to recall all my family's birthdays as we speak and if I don't get anywhere with that I'm going to try to recall my coming appointments and bills that need to be paid. I promise not to cheat by looking at the pile or calendar. Now was there a traffic ticket I had to do something with?..... =:)
Another fine hub my friend!
I like the way you added a quiz near the end. It tested us if we really paid attention and remembered what we read.
I wrote a hub about memory sometime ago. Maybe you would like to link up?
Rated up and useful!
Boy am I going to have to load up on celery, carrots, and almonds. My poor memory is shot.
This is a fascinating hub and great tips about improving your memory. Rated up awesome.
Sweet wishes Rhonda
I claim that I was born with a defective memory, in order to justify myself in instances of unjustifiable behavior :-)
This is so great! We do need to work on this more than we do, we just can't be to careful here. You never know just what will happen to your mind in later years, may have it as prepared an one can right. Anther great HUB!
Very nice hub.
