Homeopathy for Natural Healing

My Dad was a Homeopath. When I was growing up I dare not tell my friends, for fear that they would snicker; after all, someone called a “homeopath” must be either “funny that way” or psychotic. He was neither; he simply practiced and believed in the merits of homeopathic medicine.

It wasn’t too long ago when terms like “alternative medicine” or “naturopathy” were foreign to the general public. Even breast-feeding was a borderline naughty word. That was something a modern woman wouldn’t dream of doing.

I’m not really sure when my Dad took up homeopathy, but for as long as I can remember there was a closet filled with boxes and boxes of dark brown cylindrical bottles no bigger than your forefinger and plugged with cute little corks. The labels all had funny names like Nux Vomica and Belladonna.

Something For Everything

Every time I got a tummy ache, Dad would make me open wide and lift my tongue while he tapped in three or four little Nux Vomica pills that tasted like sugar and looked like teensy marshmallows. They melted away in a flash they got rid of the tummy ache in a flash too.

Dad regularly administered Arnica for bumps and bruises (there were lots of those), Ferrum phos for sore throats and Pulsatilla for our snotty noses.

When Mom got a headache, Belladonna was the cure. If Dad was grouchy, he took Kali phosporicum to lift his spirits.

It’s interesting to note that the berries of the Belladonna plant (a/k/a/ Deadly Nightshade) are extremely poisonous. I remember hearing an old legend that goes back to the 14th century of how Belladonna got its name. It tells of the alluring women of Italy who put drops made from the juice of the Belladonna berry into their eyes to expand the pupils, thereby making them look more enticing to unsuspecting men. You wouldn’t want to try that beauty secret at home today.

Many homeopathic remedies contain ingredients that would be poisonous in larger doses, but in all homeopathic medicines, the active ingredient is so minute, it is perfectly safe to ingest; more so than some over-the-counter medications.

How it all works

The theory behind homeopathy is that the energy or “essence’ of the active ingredient activates your natural immune system. In essence your body heals itself, triggered by the homeopathic medication. There are many homeopathic remedies and if you are looking to find the perfect one for your symptom you’ll find that there are many choices. What’s more, if a specific remedy doesn’t seem to work, you may find another that does. My recent Hub, Homeopathic Medicine: Are You Taking the Right Remedy for Your Ailment is has additional information to guide you.

I must state that, all advice given here is for educational purpose only and you should always check with your doctor before beginning any form of medical treatment.

How They Make Homeopathic Medicine

Homeopathy For Life

All stories and theories aside, for me Homeopathic medicine was a family tradition. Unless we needed a doctor’s visit (yes, he made house calls), we rarely took pharmaceutically prepared medicine. Those little brown bottles traveled well too.

If we took a cruise, Dad took along Cocculus in case of seasickness. There was that appropriately named Nux Vomica if we ate too much at the midnight buffet, and of course Carbo Vegetabilis for every Dad’s problem, gas.

As everyone got older, Rhus Tox was taken for aches and pains. When my husband and I had difficulty conceiving a child, I turned to homeopathic medicine yet again. I've completely forgotten which remedy was prescribed, but I will tell you it was one time homeopathy didn't work for me.

Dad continued to rely on homeopathic remedies for the rest of his life. I now realize why he didn’t look at me sideways when I decided to become a Reiki Master and practice that alternative energy treatment. He even accepted Reiki treatments when he was hospitalized for heart surgery at age 87. Dad died happily of old age six years later.

Today I still pop those funny sugary pills prescribed by my Dad the homeopath and they still work for me a good 95% of the time. I also try to live my life with his philosophies of all things natural in mind and strive to live up to his perceptive ideals. Life is good.

Hello Green Lotus. How lucky you were to have such a smart, no-nonsense dad. You must have taken the natural healing approach for granted when you growing up. Good for you.

Another fine hub.

Wow, Green Lotus. Not only was this a good hub on homeopathic drugs, but this doubled as a mini-biography of your late father. It sure seems like you took after him, huh? You must have loved him very much.

Kudos to you.

By the way, I love the name Bellladonna. I might have to swipe that for a character in one of my sketchy stories :D

You are truely a gifted spirit, Green Lotus...informative yet interesting (most times that doesn't go together.) I'll have to agree with you, I don't believe in taking any pharmaceutical medicine unless I absolutely have to. Prescription drugs have their purpose, but they shouldn't be used a crutch! Go Green, baby! Green!

Hi tim! You're right he was "no-nonsense" and also progressive. It's amazing what you take for granted when you're young and (nearly) carefree. Thanks for visiting!

Hi dohn. I really appreciate it. He was a great guy and set a wonderful example for me in life. Belladonna is a cool name for your character too!... especially one who's a dangerous beauty! How about Nightshade for her last name? (LOL, just kidding)

Yes drej!..I always say Live Green and Live Long:) Thank you so much for saying such nice things. It's really appreciated.

This was so touching to read. The beautiful spirit of your Father can be certainly sensed through your words.

One of the best Hubs about homeopathics - in your Hub they are so much "alive".

Thank you.

In Europe it's pretty easy to demonstrate that Homoeopathy works:

First only doctors can prescribe homoeopathic pills.

Second you can buy them only in Pharmacy.

Third drug companies tried to acquire the rights to produce homoeopathic remedies only under their control in their factories, but for now they weren't allowed.

Are other proofs needed?

Great hub Green Lotus, and the wonderful addition of your father' story is even greater. Obviously rated up.

Was your father ahead of his time or just practicing what he was taught? Obviously, it worked, living to 93. Great information, GL. The natural way is always best. Our bodies were not meant to be bombarded with synthesized medication. I think it does more harm than good.

Hi Hypnodude! That is so interesting. I am a little confused;however, because in several European and Middle Eastern countries (and I think in Canada) you can purchase many pharmaceutical drugs without a prescription. I do know that homeopathy is widely practiced throughout Europe where in the US it's still considered to be "outside" mainstream medicine. I always appreciate your comments, hypno. Thanks!

Hello Jai! Good to see you and thanks so much for your kind words. My father was ahead of his time when it came to accepting theories of energy medicine, and artistic taste, but he still had many "old fashioned" ideas that could be very challenging to an independent thinker such as myself :)

Green Lotus - you accomplished something that is very difficult with this Hub.

It is informative and interesting and at the same time a lovely testament to your feelings for your dad. You were fortunate - and so was he.

Ah, this is so beautiful. And fascinating too. Thinking the way you do, I knew you had to come from special parents. I think it's people like your dad who bring each generation just a little step forward - and future generations will thank them for it!

You're right - life is good. And the more people like your dad in each generation, the better. Take care!

Hiya, yes I totally understand where he was coming from! Even as a young person I tried alternative treatments for things. Like even now I use ginger for sea sickness, and always use herbs for cuts and bruizes. Comfrey is great if you get a bruise, as it is called knitbone, evidently they use it in some hospitals now to help the bone to grow again. Belladona was always regarded as poisonous, and obviously it has to be administered by a proper homeopathy doctor. I remember reading about ladies using it in there eyes! ouch! thanks for a great hub. cheers nell

As a dad myself I aways feel touched when people refer to their fathers. I find it so touching.

But is ther anything more you can write about "Cocculus in case of seasickness" please? Was this effective?

Green Lotus profile image

Green Lotus Hub Author 2 years ago

Hi De Greek..For me, some homeopathic remedies work better than others. I have learned that experimentation is the key. Arnica always speeds up the healing process for me (even works to speed up upcoming surgery recovery) and I swear by Natrum Muriaticum at the first sign of a cold or flu. With homeopathic meds, you will find that the numerous books and websites tout different remedies for different ailments. Since there's no harm in experimenting, I would suggest it. Thanks as always for the read and the comment!
