Men in Kilts
90
I always liked the fact that real men ate tofu, practiced yoga and wore kilts. I have; however, admired men in kilts long before I heard of yoga or tofu.
Years ago in the U.S., at a time when gender specific tasks, rules and traditions were the norm, the thought of men wearing skirts would invariably induced a snicker from most manly American men and domesticated American women. People joked that the first man to don a kilt was probably not Scottish, but he was invariably a transvestite. I thought differently, in fact, I thought men in kilts were sexy.
I’ve still to learn about the history of the kilt but I do know that the many colorful plaids of greens, reds, blues, golds and other bright colors woven into intricate patterns represent the tartan of the “clan” or family name.
I also love the high kilt socks, intricately constructed from fine wool and often embellished with tassels and hidden weaponry The cute mary-jane-type lace-up shoes called Ghillie Brogues are also a favorite.
It’s only recently; however, that I’ve had the pleasure of actually meeting up with men in kilts.

Two years ago, on a trip to Glasgow, I had the happy duty of experiencing a bit of Scottish culture. I relished the haggis – a traditional breakfast “hash” made of sheep’s innards (heart, liver and lungs), mixed with a bit of onion, fat, oatmeal and spices. I also enjoyed the savory Scottish pasties, which I confirmed were not a titillating item of clothing, but a meat pie (no potatoes) made of delicate pie pastry and meat filling.
One evening while enjoying drinks and appetizers at a stunning lobby bar at a posh Glasgow hotel, I was treated to a parade of handsome young men in kilts who were arriving for a wedding reception. It seems on special occasions such as weddings the men of Scotland don their kilts and proudly show off their tartan colors along with their lovely legs.
The show was excellent and I had a grand view beneath the glass stairway that led up to the reception halls. It was great fun trying to get a look up their skirts as they ascended the staircase. It is true that gentlemen do not wear undergarments underneath their kilts.
I personally attended two unrelated summer weddings where I was treated to men in kilts. One was in Ireland where my Scottish friend entertained us not merely by wearing a kilt but by playing the bagpipes as well; the other took place back home in “Hotlanta” where the groom was decked out in full Scottish regalia. His best man, also dressed in a kilt, managed to keep cool by standing over one of the few a/c vents in the floor. It reminded me of Marilyn Monroe's famous subway vent scene in "The Seven Year Itch".
As summer approaches I think back upon those memories with great affection; my wonderful trips to the UK, my cool British mates and all those lovely men in kilts.

Achh, m'wee lass. Ye make me laff so... That first picture is a screamer.
Also, I've always had the impression that Scottish food is not exactly healthy, i.e. lots of pastry, meat, fat, etc. Show me the veg...(probably boiled).
Nice hub GL. You made my day.
nice hub, not to Skirt the issue, but, Kilted people with glass stairs shouldn't throw parties!!
Your hub is surely the next best thing to being there, Green Lotus! Well now, though, the piper is not so old, though his knees are a bit knobby! Still, he did attract the rapt attention of some quite young wannabes!
A most delightful read, start to finish! Convinces me that I simply must treat myself to a trip to Scotland before I'm too old to fully appreciate the scenery!
Green Lotus, see what you have done now? You go off all poetic on us about looking up men's kilts and you set off Nellianna. Where will this trend now end I ask? Are we poor non-kilt wearing men to start getting measured for kilts if we are to have a chance of surviving in this kilt wearing world? The expense involved, the choice of tartan, the doubts about the right tailor, the forthcoming resulting colds, the list is almost endless!
So, shame on you I say for starting this shameful trend and you can be sure that I shall send you all relevant doctors bills as a result of freezing my balls off by wearing this contraption you have become so enamoured of and as a result have corrupted the chaste womanhood of the world!
I love men in kilts on a windy afternoon! Thanks for this well produced hub - your talent shines through as always:)
Ah Scotland, Scotland, one of the best places in the world. I've never been to Glasgow, but Edinburgh is wonderful. Rated and stumbled. And thanks. :)
I was wondering which direction I was going to go regarding my latest clothing purchases, now I've got it....Kilts!!!! just for you sweetie, ha ha.
Love, Gaz
Oh Yeah....Giggidy
Interesting hub and of course that first picture catches your attention immediately. I enjoyed it. Thanks.
How appropriate GL, I'm sitting on my sofa watching the Masters, a sport where gents wear plus fours (knickers) and Scotland is it's birthplace. I really can't imagine wearing a kilt let alone, going "commando"! Nonetheless, Always a great read, Thanks.
Don't think I'd ever attempt the haggis, GL, I've seen a TV show on Discovery regarding it and I almost lost my lunch. :)
BUT, I loved this hub and enjoyed imagining being in Glasgow with you gazing lustily at these gents!
Kilts are great. I have friends who wear utilikilts, which are like cargo kilts with pockets for whatever you need, and generally black, not plaid. It's not a skirt, it's a kilt! :) Great hub.
Great read…..the information is poignant very interesting please keep them coming !!

Great hub! That picture alone should make any man think twice about wearing a kilt.
Nice Hub! Most Scotsmen only wear kilts on special occasions, but when he retired, my Dad took to wearing his as his normal attire. He said he liked the freedom of it (which was too much information for his daughters, needless to say!).
The kilt is surprisingly warm, even though the lower half is open to the elements, because the material is so warm and there's so much of it.
great hub!! really enjoyed reading it. best say this is one of the best hubs around here.
Green Lotus, Love this hub I love kilts and admire the heck outta any good Scot who wears one. Thanks and Peace :)
Gosh, I must have led a sheltered life - do these Scottish men really wander up glass staircases without so much as a haggis to protect their modesty?! I had a look at the history of the kilt - it's quite interesting and overtturned some of my ideas I had on tartan and kilts.
I love those shoes - I have a pair of Mary Jane's Doc Marten's that I'm never without, gosh and I eat tofu too, and I practise yoga, and yes, I have a kilt too...oh no! I'm a man!
Hm, kilt, why not if man has nice legs... Hehe.
Aha! Right up my totally masculine alley. Actually where I was a monk was in Scotland (Pluscarden Abbey), so I very much enjoyed this paean to Scottish culture. I never got to wear a kilt, alas. But the monastic habit is quite dresslike; I remember having to lift it daintily to walk up and down stairs. I didn't even get to see anyone in a kilt. Truly disappointing. Oh, and haggis is far more delicious than minced sheep innards has any right to be.
Cheers!
I love men in kilts! Hubby has one that he wears to the GA Renaissance Festival!
Hi, I am shocked! looking up their kilts! ha ha sounds like the kind of thing that I would do. seriously though, I do think they always look more manly when they wear them, I think it's the knees...! lol cheers nell
I thought the woman went wangy over Mel Gibson in Bravehart when he sported a Kilt. It takes a real man to wear one like Sean Connery and Mel lol
I tend to agree with you on Mel. It seems him and his Dad have both gone a little loopy. Now Sean, there's a mans man and a fine one at that, even at his ripe old age the ladies still swoon. He will always be the best James Bond character ever who played the role. His rugged goods looks have stood the test of time, but looking under his Kilt now lass, that is naught. Wink-Wink..but he would let you:0)
The reason why men and women of the 1960s and before would have laughed at the sight of men in kilts is because they (with a FEW exceptions) are not as smart as most Americans of today (they don't see the connection between kilts and masculinity as well as most of the younger generations do). The millenials (1978 - 2001) grew up with all this kilt stuff in the media, movies, and pop culture, so most of them view it as masculine. Even generation x (1965 - 77) is not far behind. But the Baby Boomers (of course, not all of them), especially their parents, are less accepting of this kind of diversity due to the strict gender roles that they grew up with. I could tell because most of those who made nice comments or smiled at me whenever I wear kilts are younger people. Studies have shown that younger folks are much more likely to be accepting of men in kilts (and even skirts) than those who are older.
There's one particular student at OSU campus that wears kilts and full kit daily. His friends dress in casual, grunge, and other styles, but they all hang out together and he is always 100% attractive and sharp. I always liked the full kit attire on a man.
It may look funnier to see men in Kilts. But, many enjoy this...
I am ALL for men in kilts and the guys in my Celtic Rock band have women lining up to meet them after the shows.
It's fantastic! Here is one of our recent moments on the tele~

All the greates warrior cultures in history have worn kilts - the Romans, Greeks, Scots and Irish. The Greeks still wear kilts and so do some people in Ireland.
This is a great hub, and I've always liked men in kilts. Cool!

As a proud scotsman I can tell you there is nothing better than the attention ones get from women when the old kilt is on.

That very first photo of two Scottish tykes playing the game of, "Do You See What I See?" is priceless. What a stroke of brilliance for your hub which is also excellent.
