Meditation Techniques for Overactive Minds
75
I recently wrote an article on Yoga, which mentioned Yoga’s mind/body benefits along with other practices such as Meditation. One of my regular commenters here, DzyMsLizzy, mentioned that she always had difficulty with Meditation because her mind was overactive. This is not uncommon! Most of us have a lot going on upstairs especially during more stressful times. Even though we desperately want to quiet our thoughts, there’s no handy “on/off” switch. Actually, it’s impossible to turn off one’s thoughts entirely and still remain conscious, but it is possible to successfully Meditate and still think! The question remains, how do you calm your overactive mind and slow down those ever-racing thoughts and ideas?
Basic Stuff
There are some simple, methods you can try such as choosing a space where you won’t be disturbed or distracted. You can focus on your breathing, or repeat a mantra; in fact, you can go to simple “learn how to meditate” websites that are supposed to teach you how to reach nirvana in a few easy steps, such as this site charmingly named, “Meditate With Piggies” – Truly adorable, and not without merit...but not terribly effective. I also have a popular article on how to meditate easily.
Something Effective
If you’ve been trying to Meditate without success, it’s time for a new perspective. Take heart. I’ve discovered some “at-home” bio-feedback programs that are remarkably effective.
The best bio-feedback training program I’ve found is actually a computer game called “Relaxing Rhythms”. It’s the first in a series by a computer game/bio-feedback company called Wild Devine. I reviewed some of their CD’s before, but I’ve only just discovered this one, which is great for those who are looking for an easy way to learn how to meditate.
Unlike a simple guided meditation CD that can be boring, “Relaxing Rhythms” engages your entire mind and is interactive. You pop in the CD, hook yourself up to their very cool IOM Sensor and the fun begins. The sensor is not unlike an electrode, which measures your level of stress and control. On this computer game you won’t be worrying about speed and dexterity. Getting to the next level at “Relaxing Rhythms” means you’re your thoughts and emotions are closer to achieving an effective meditative state.
The initial investment is not cheap…about $275 for the IOM, but the CD’s (and there are a lot in the series) are reasonably priced. There are also some attractively priced bundles. With the holidays always around the corner, or somebody’s birthday close at hand, this series of bio-feedback games is the perfect gift.
Here’s How it Works
You attach the IOM connector to the computer and to the fingers on one hand. As you play the game, you use your mind (rather than a typical joystick) to work out the challenges. You can track your body's signals as they rise and fall in synch with your state of mind. The visuals of the game are quite beautiful and so is the relaxing music. Your meditation and breathing techniques improve allowing you experience the many benefits of meditation including stress reduction, better concentration and a greater level of physical and mental well-being.
There’s also a 15-step training program taught by the most popular and globally respected experts in the field of health, wellness, meditation and self-awareness. Doctors include including Andrew Weil, M.D., Deepak Chopra, M.D., and Dean Ornish, M.D.
All the Wild Divine games work on the premise that brain development can be enhanced -- not only during adolescence, but at any age -- through the practice of meditation, even if you have been diagnosed with ADHD, (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). With proper instruction, anyone can do it.

I found this very usefull! Thank you.
Well hey...neato, G.L. Unfortunately, the initial investment is a bit beyond my current means. I'll just have to remember to breathe slowly and deeply, more often..at least it's free! lol.
I would say to those beginning meditators to not worry about having too much thoughts in your head. The main point is to be aware that you are having these thoughts and to pull your mind back to your mediation focus every time you notice those thoughts. What matters more is this act of mind training and less important is the goal of having no thoughts -- a goal which is not possible (as mentioned in the article it is not possible to have no thoughts and still be conscious).
Jon Kabat-Zinn (an expert in mindfulness meditation and has written several books) says that mediation session can neither be good nor bad. He said that in his 2006 talk at MIT (video here: http://mitworld.mit.edu/video/370/) That means that even if you have too much thoughts in your head during a meditation session, that is not considered a bad meditation. It only matters that you try to pull your mind back whenever it starts wandering away. A lot of people is not aware that their mind is wandering or having aniexty. The benefit of the bio-feedback software is that it points that out to you. But still, it is you who have to control your mind back to it meditative focus -- the software does not control your mind.
Of course beginning meditators should begin in a quiet location. But advanced meditators can mediate even in loud and noisy environments.
GL, I don't formally meditate, but everyday I find at least 10 minutes of "quiet time". Usually, first thing in the morning. That little bit of solitude helps to focus me for the day ahead. Let's face it, we all have overactive minds. Great tips... meditation is a fantastic way to calm that little fiery voice in your head. Thanks GL, Ciao!
I began meditating back in the 70's-the TM movement was quite the thing, you know. The 'point' of meditating was to use the mantra to quiet these thoughts. I remember getting to the point of giggling uncontrollably and my guide pointed out that giddiness was the first step to hushing those constant voices.
I need to check out your suggestions, GL, for as we get older, the thoughts seem to be getting louder and more insistent!
Thanks for a great read!
I love that bio feedback can be done at home, and the idea of playing video games with bio feedback seems so sci-fi, but we're there. When this recession is really over, I might "invest" in it....or, rather, spend on it. I had TM instruction when I was 18, and it has helped me so much. I love guided imagery too. This new stuff is right up my alley. Thanks GL.
Hi Green Lotus. Thanks for watching my video! :D
Meditating is good for the body and mind.
I have tried to meditate but lately I can't so I will try these suggestions. Thanks for this great hub! :D
HI, this sounds like the kind of thing I would love to have a go at, I do mantras at night to help me sleep, but the trouble is that if I forget to do it, my mind won't shut down until I do! defeating the object, as they say! lol thanks nell
This is certainly great suggestion for people who cannot relax, sounds interesting and entertaining at the same time.
Great information! Thank you! I like to meditate and I do have one of those minds that never wants to turn off. I meditate by picturing a beautiful serene field with trees all around and all the peaceful things of nature and I concentrate on that.
Wow - new age meditation? Sounds good!
Oh, my goodness, Green Lotus! Thanks so much for this info! I'm honored that you wrote this based on my comment.
I have been very busy with a ton of new projects, and have been unable to visit HP, so only just found this article tonight.
I will definitly bookmark this hub, and hopefully, one day, I might actually be able to afford that CD series ;-) Thanks much!
Love the biofeedback thing, I'll put that on the list-of-things-to-get-over-my-boredom-once-I'm-A-Millionaire list. Haha. Seriously though, I am cut from the same clothe as dizzymslZzy. But I still try, and your hub is a great reminder to me GL, to try to slow my breathing, it's amazing how so much begins and ends there.
Thanks for this relaxing article.
Ben
I love this article, especially since I also have trouble meditating, or I should say feeling like I'm doing it right. Every time I try to meditate, I lose concentration within 30 seconds or so and tell myself "well, that didn't work". I know, silly huh. However, I feel I can accomplish this now since I saw what seems to be the right book for me..."Meditate with Piggies"! I mean c'mon, if Piggies can meditate, why can't I? This book is right up my alley. As always sweetie, another great hub. Useful, informative, funny and so entertaining.

This is sounds really good but....
Do you have anything for those who fall asleep while meditating? That's what happens to me most of the time. Hahaha!
Well, I'm familiar with Dr. Weil and Deepak Chopra and actually own several of their publications. We really share several things in common.
Great hub GL! Thanks for sharing!
Green Lotus ~ Although I don't have an overactive mind........ I am easily distracted. I wonder if this might possible rein me in............. thanks for this ~ Kaie
I can understand the bit about an overactive mind, but what happens when mind is dead, like mine is? :-)
Meditation is the greatest way and natural remedies. As the healing technique, meditation is a good choice for us. I love doing meditation in the morning. Good information and very inspiring us. Vote up as usual.
