Living Backwards: Taking Inspiration from the Past, Present and Future.
83
Some people always look to the future; moving forward, moving on, living for tomorrow, hoping for a better day. Others are grounded in the present and still others spend a lot of time reliving their past affairs and accomplishments.
Most will agree that living in the present is the most favorable and realistic of the three mindsets; however, there is another way of looking at things that takes all tenses into consideration. I call this mindset Living Backwards. One takes inspiration from the past, energy from the present and vision from the future.
Have A Backward Day!
I have fond memories of a book that was read to me when I was barely out of diapers. It was entitled The Backward Day by Ruth Krauss.
The Backward Day tells the story of a little boy who decides to live his day backwards. It doesn’t bother to explain why he's taken on such a ridiculous notion, but I remember thinking that I couldn’t care less.
Anyway, this boy gets up and puts on his jacket, shirt and pants. He then puts his underwear on over all his clothes and walks down the stairs backwards. When his parents greet him, he answers with a cheerful, “Good night”. Amused at their son’s creativity, they join in the game and everyone has a delightful day.
There are some interesting lessons to be considered here. One is that routines can get boring, so it’s OK, even acceptable to do something outrageous. Another is that it’s fun to break the rules. Inventing your own rules can be liberating; even life changing.
Some very basic examples of doing things backwards include eating dessert before the main course, or consuming a big breakfast and a small dinner and having sex before you get married.
These activities can be healthful to us physically, but what about thinking in a backward way? Can that have a positive effect on our lives? I say, "Yes, it can". Thinking of oneself as a writer or an actor before one becomes a professional in those fields is not only liberating, it can be conducive to one’s success. Some call this kind of behavior "living into the dream", or something to that effect. In any case, it has been proven to be an effective way of reaching your goals.

Getting Unstuck
As we mature we learn what’s socially acceptable for our culture, but we also get caught up in the system and get trapped by our own self-imposed rules. A lot of those rules are just a bunch of old doctrines that have gone stale and don’t even work for us anymore. It takes courage and self-criticism (that’s a tough one) to break away, but it can be done.
Deciding to do something outrageous may attract some criticism from your friends and family, but personal evolution sometimes requires a big bang on the noggin.
One of my favorite old movies, “Holiday” starring Cary Grant demonstrates the Living Backwards concept perfectly.
“Holiday” is about Johnny, a thirty-year-old man, played by Grant who decides that he would like use what little money he has to take a few years off for self-discovery. Afterward, he'll be ready to settle down to a life of work and responsibility. Johnny feels, 'Why wait until you’re old and sick to retire?'. That’s doing things backwards.
If we can reject conventional employment in favor of independent creative living; telling ourselves that we’re “already there”, perhaps life won’t pass us by, leaving us with a bunch of “what ifs” and “if only’s”.
Go For It
They say that, “Youth is wasted on the young”. If this is true, I say, “Don’t grow up so fast”. No matter how old you are, grab hold of that youthful spirit and natural ferocity and go for it. It may take some bending over backwards, but life happens now and the future becomes a memory in an instant.
Here’s Woody Allen’s Perspective on Living Backwards.

Having finished, Im looking forward to reading this hub!
I really like this. "One takes inspiration from the past, energy from the present and vision from the future." Great hub. Thanks
Ha! Woody Allen's suggestion sounds a lot like "The Curious case of Benjamin Button" which was of course written by F. Scott Fi?zgerald. I think I get a little bit younger every time I spend time with my niece and nephews. What a way to live! Awesome work, Green Lotus!
Excellent Hub in every way and some great advice here. Thanks
What a wonderful hub, Green Lotus. So often, we get onto that treadmill and forget to stop and smell the roses. So often, we're so busy growing older, we forget what it's like to be young. I love that Woody Allen bit :)
Green Lotus - I absolutely love this hub! What a great idea and concept for a hub. I vaguely remember the story about the boy living backwards not from my childhood but from reading to my grandchildren.
And for Woody Allen I have read this one before, but had no idea he was the author Woody Allen's. I was hysterical then and am laughing once again.
Really enjoyed your hub all around. A great read.

Very interesting Green Lotus, and pretty right too. Doing things differently can lead to great results, as someone said doing always the same things will give always the same results. Or something like that. Well said and well done. :)
iH neerG sutoL,

Wonderful hub. Woody Allen had the right idea!
This is one of my favorite Hubs EVER! Green Lotus, you are such a kick, and the topics you come up with are fantastic. Thank you, thank you for putting a HUGE smile on my face!
GL you are kind to lead me back to faith. My wife is pregnant now so the monetary pressures of life have turned up a little. I'm happy as a clam if I can still write and paint so I will continue to aim for that "made it" feeling in the wordsback way usual, you thank! Katloz Neb
I really enjoyed this hub.... =)
HeHeHe, Woody Allen has a way with words. While cute and funny this hub is a great reminder that we should embrace each day for the day it is and stop making ourselves older by worrying about tomorrow.:) Thanks for sharing your insight.
Well if you live life backwards... LIVE would be EVIL .. it would, therefore, relate to stagnation and standing still. Do you see the connection?
thought provoking hub x
omg haha! that Woody Allen stuff was priceless! this whole hub is a small masterpiece. i am bookmarking that Cary Grant video and showing it to my son. wonderful!
Gosh, reading that has made me feel so much better! Yes, I'm all for backwards living - I was so much older when I was a teenager I sometimes can't believe it! Enjoyed that clip with Cary Grant - that's another film I'll have to watch and that children's book...I want to get my hands on it! And the Woody Allen poem - that was the first time I read it! It's like opening a Christmas stocking when I read your hubs - I can't wait for the next!
An amusing concept; thanks for sharing. :)
Great advice. Thanks
You should follow me and read some of my hubs
Hello Green Lotus. Another insightful hub. I enjoyed it very much.
Quite true..it's no good repeating the same routine, day in, day out. In fact, your eyes and brain need constant fresh input, otherwise your vision becomes poor, and your brain turns to pudding.
I find if I get stuck on some problem, I go away and do something totally unrelated, come back later and solve the problem in no time.
We all need diversions on a fairly regular basis, just to maintain our sanity, even happiness.
"but life happens now and the future becomes a memory in an instant" I love that, great words!
Right. I am now officially addicted to you and I shall have to have my daily dose. Just think of how damaging this is. What have you done! ... :-))
Thank you for this excellent, cleverly written piece. I want more!
In the book called "Sum" by David Eagleman, he has a fictional story called "Reversal" where at some point in time, the universe stop expanding and start rewinding backwards. And you then get to live your entire life over again -- but backwards.
Hi Green Lotus, An interesting perspective and some good ideas to try and freshen up your life. Michael.
lovely perspective! even if one cannot start working
t0tally in reverse one can at least go backwards some of the time instead of being fossilised in the present.
it is when we shout and scream at football matches or roll with laffter at silly jokes or behave like juveniles at our reunions that we really feel HAPPY.if we can revert back on prupose occasionally, maybe the present will become more energising and the vision of the future more achievable.
keep those wacky ideas coming green.luv ya
Hello Green Lotus, arrived here in a roundabout way following suggested links in a prose poem piece I just published about reading the biography of Kierkegaard instead of watching tv, Whew! I really like your writings on philosophy and philosophers here on Hub Pages, thank you for your efforts, Regards, snakeslane
I just found this hub while browsing this category, getting ready to write a new hub. Sorry I missed this when first published. I love the concept. While I try to remain in the present, I often feel like I'm living backwards! I really enjoyed reading this and love the video and Woody Allen quote. Thanks GL. Enjoy each moment!

Ah, what a delight, as Woody Allen said, to end life in an orgasm after getting death out of the way. I believe you are right in so many ways, not traipsing through life in a worry. But alas, I have spent the last six months under this type of experiment and now the wolf is at the door and I am knocking on factories doors or anything to help pay the bills. I wish with all my heart for the lackadaisical nuances of this article to come true for those lucky or directed enough to gain it.
