Do You Believe in Leprechauns?
78
There’s a growing community of Leprechaun believers who are over the age of 8. That’s when statisticians tell us we begin to question the existence of benevolent beings such as Santa Clause, The Tooth Fairy and similar mythical iconic creatures of nature and festive occasions. Believers really think those little green clad, pointy-eared fellows exist and are able to communicate with us in the “real world”. It’s a nice thought and perhaps it’s true; after all, many people believe in angels and spiritual guides.
Just for the record, those legendary Irish creatures know as Leprechauns, fall into the categories of elves and faeries, although unlike those sprightly beings, they are all male.
Leprechauns don’t actually live on Earth. According to true believers, they reside on another astral plane of existence somewhere between the physical world and the spirit world.
If you believe in Leprechauns, chances are you’ve encountered one or two and can vouch for the fact that they stand only between 1 and 1 1/2 feet tall. Perhaps you’ve noted that they are all fair skinned and red headed; that they often wear a “pilgrim style” hat with a gold buckle; that they are addicted to smoking tobacco in a calabash style pipe, fancy a good beer or fine Irish whiskey and like to nibble finger food portions of garlic, cabbage, and more recently, “lucky charms” breakfast cereal.
Leprechauns were once regarded as been being secretive and unsociable. It was thought that they would rather spend their day making a nice pair of shiny black leather shoes for themselves or perhaps a pink pointy-tipped pair for a faerie-world patron.
They have; however, been known to pop in and out of our material world where they pull pranks on mortal men who foolishly think they can outwit them.
Actually, the perception that Leprechauns are anti-social and mischievous comes from commercial exploitation of these jovial, good-natured creatures. There are many fractured faerie tales and twisted Hollywood movies that would lead you to believe Leprechauns are scheming, miserly, reclusive and sometimes evil.
Leprechauns are, as believers would say, true “Irish nature spirits”, committed to sustaining and maintaining the natural world. Their favorite places to hang about are wishing wells filled with fresh spring water, clear babbling brooks, and sparkling waterfalls. They enjoy both Celtic and Irish music and are fabulous dancers.
These mythical Irish elves, are “green” creatures in the fullest sense of the word, in fact, those who believe in them know that all a Leprechaun really wants (besides a good smoke and a shot of single malt whiskey) is to help us humans protect and preserve the natural beauty of the planet. They promise that if we do so, they'll help us realize our own dreams and they won't pull any pranks!

I loved this. Charming
Beautiful hub, Green Lotus.
I have to admit I don't believe in leprechauns although during my last visit to Erin, the sceenery was so beautifully mystical, my unbelief was shaken.
I do believe in the Tooth Fairy, though. I saw him in a movie and he strikingly resembles Dwayne Johnson known as the Rock from his wrestling days.
As you are a being of a "green" nature, St. Patty's Day should be your nirvana. I don't believe in Leprechauns but, the Easter Bunny, that's another matter. Make some corn beef & cabbage and wash it down with a cold brew. Life's Good!!!
Very nice, Green Lotus.
Beautiful job, GL!

Yes I do believe!! Love it. Seriously though, there are people who do believe they have actually seen them. They obviously don't know if they are leprechauns, but claim to have seen small people digging up the ground in the evening or late at night, in different parts of Great Britain. not always Ireland!! they said when they walk past these little people the small people stop and stare at them, and the second you take your eyes of them, they disapear!! maybe they have been drinking too much, but maybe not.... cheers nell
This hub is adorable. I loved it. Good hub for HubMob topic.
Wow, I wish I could see a leprechaun. They wouldn't happen to have any cousins that emigrated to America would they?
Sylphs, Gnomes, Undines, Salamander's and Spirit - they are all elementals. Lepre's are just another name, I think for the earth spirit - Gnomes.
Nice hub and thanks my friend x
I learnt about these elves in one of the hubs for this week and decided to write about the same topic you presented in this hub. Your hub is really great so I posted a direct link from my hub to yours and rated it up!
Hi Green Lotus,
Well I never met Santa Claus & was very curious to meet the tooth fairy but it never happened.
I never even knew Leprechauns existed. They look cute, may be I will see them in my dreams.
Thanks for sharing the info.
Fascinating hub! I really enjoyed this!
Thanks for sharing Green Lotus!
I never thought I would ever say anything like this but the world is opening up to me every day - I might be inclined to believe in them. Actually my Irish friend once told me about when he saw a little man at the end of his garden and I just sniggered - but no, times they are a-changin' so little green men, come forth!! I'm sure you're right - I bet they're jolly good fellows indeed! Perhaps they'll make me a new pair of Doc Martens if I ask nicely!
Well, I've actually seen one, but I still don't believe it was something real. It is one of my earliest memories and I would estimate I was about 1 year old, still in my crib. I can remember being in utter terror of it for 2 or 3 afternoons in a row it would somehow come in the window and climb around the ceiling fixture. It was about one foot tall and I distinctly remember seeing its hat, which was crushed on one side. Out of the side of its mouth was a pipe and it was wearing incredibly old fashioned shoes with a buckle of some sort instead of laces. I have no idea what in the hell it was. I can recall that it had a very old looking wizened face and it seemed to have taken an interest in just hanging from the light fixture and looking at me. I'd like to think this was just childish imagination but I keep wondering how such an image would get into the head of a child of 1 year old in the pre TV era. I distinctly recall looking at its hat, the shoes, the pipe and the wizened face. In fact, the incongruity of it is probably why it stayed in my mind. No, I was not dreaming and was most certainly wide awake. Books or magazines? I don't think so, I didn't start reading until 3 or 4. And I'm not Irish. Mysterious.
Glad you liked it. There is one other detail, which, as if the whole thing was not crazy enough, adds the final layer of utter mystery on the whole thing. If I remember correctly while looking at it hanging from the celing fixture, the pipe in his mouth was upside down (!!?!).
What he would be doing in Rhode Island in the late 1940's I have no idea. I have no idea what a "hub" is.
This is an awesome story. I've seen the pictures of Leprechauns often but I didn't know its name and friendly character. I hope he rally exists to help us preserve the earth.
Hi, Thanks for the link, and I will add this to mine too, you never know we may be inundated with Leprechauns! haha!

I don't know if Leprechauns do exist, but they are a pretty beautiful legend. I always loved this group of Little People enjoying their life, making shoes and drinking beer, in their wonderful suit. And if I'm right they are also the guardians of the golden pot. Very beautiful hub Green Lotus, well done.
