Are You A Health Freak?
86
You don’t have to make yourself crazy to be healthy. That defeats the whole purpose of living well. If you're desperately trying to keep your cholesterol below 200, your blood pressure under 130 systolic and your silhouette svelte, you're letting healthy living get the best of you.
It may not be your fault that you've become obsessive about eating right and staying in shape. Good health is also big business and both the media and medical profession do a pretty good job turning out Health Freaks who are coincidentally healthy consumers, but it is possible to live a healthy lifestyle without becoming consumed by the state of your constitution.
Here are some basic guidelines for Healthful Living from a former Health Freak :
- You don’t have to buy every vitamin supplement on the market.
- You don’t have to swear you’ll never eat another French fry or beat yourself up for missing this week’s aerobic class.
- You don't have to be a particular size to be beautiful or strive to become the poster person for The World Health Organization.
What I'm getting at is that it’s really not that difficult to become nutritionally normal and sensibly in shape. For a healthy mind and body, I propose Moderation, Mobility and Mindfulness.
Moderation -
Trying to adhere to all the Rules of every Medical Association, Health Organization and Disease Foundation can be more stressful than helpful. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re not a model health nut.
Here are some ways to Moderate your methods for keeping fit and nutritionally sound.
Don't fast or skip meals – take a few energy bars, low-carb bars, sticks of string cheese, packets of nuts, cans of V-8 juice and other easy non-perishable healthy snacks with you for those times when eating a larger meal is not possible.
Don't fall for diets that favor one food group or make grand promises. The best diets are well balanced nutritionally, promote moderation and are sustainable, meaning you can easily live with them for life. Forget the fat-burning food diet, the metabolism boosting diet, the brain power food diet and Pizza Diets. It’s all a load of rubbish.
Drink plenty of water, but don’t feel you have to drink gallons a day to “flush out those fats and toxins”. Choose room temperature water over expensive sports drinks. Water is good for you but if you’re sacrificing quality time for urinating in the bathroom, you’re overdoing a good thing.
Moderate unhealthy sleep patterns. You may like to work or party into the night, but you need to get at least 6 hours of sleep. Eight hours is even better. It’s been said that sleep deprivation is not only bad for your general health, it can cause weight gain. If you have trouble sleeping, try natural sleep aids before you succumb to prescription medications.
If you do take pharmaceutical drugs regularly as prescribed by your doctor, be aware that at least ten common medications rob your body of essential nutrients. The good news is that they can easily be replaced. Here’s a simple straightforward article from The Free Library that lists the drugs and the supplements you can take.
10 common medications that rob your body of essential nutrients (and how to protect yourself).
Take a simple over-the-counter multi-vitamin each day. Most doctors agree, a higher priced multi-vitamin doesn’t always mean it’s a better product.
Mobility
Daily Exercise puts Good Nutrition to work. They go together like Love and Marriage, but you don't have to work out for hours a day. All you really need to do is to get up and move for more than 25 minutes.
Here are some ways to Mobilize your methods for staying healthy:
Allow yourself at least 30 minutes to something good for your body. It can be as simple as stretching or as intensive as running. Just do something you will enjoy. There are loads of Hubs, Blogs, Books and Articles on Quick Workouts and you’re sure to find one suitable for your lifestyle.
Another thing I like to recommend is laughter. It's good medicine. It also burns calories. A person of average weight will burn somewhere between 10 and 50 calories in a 15 minutes period. I don’t know if an overweight person burns more calories in the same period of time, but it’s worth a try and have you nothing to lose except maybe a few pounds.
Laughing also produces those happy hormones called endorphins. Those endorphins also strengthen your immune system and lower the stress-producing hormones. Even pain is lessened during an endorphin rush.
If you don’t feel like laughing, eating chocolate also produces those same endorphins, so don’t forget to indulge every once in a while, but don’t overdo it! Chocolate is high in calories and carbohydrates (as if you didn’t know). What you may not know is that it’s also constipating which will compromise your mobility.
Mindfulness
Meditate Before You Medicate
Think about being healthy and practicing good nutrition. Creative Visualization really works; it’s relaxing, fun and doesn’t cost you a penny.
Here's an example: If you need to address a genuine health problem and you distrust pharmaceuticals, don't let yourself become overwhelmed by the many avenues of alternative methods of healing and natural medications. Let the information you’ve researched sit with you for a while. Visualize each modality and each form of natural medicine even before you make a choice. Don’t intellectualize, just go with what feels best. Sometimes your intuition is your best guide to finding the answers to difficult questions.
Visualization has also proven to be an effective aid to weight loss programs. Thinking thin, and visualizing yourself as being in shape is very powerful.
Just For Health Freaks
Here are a Few Tips That Will Prevent You From Losing Your Friends
Don’t brag about the fact that you work out 7 days a week and fast for two of those days. Not everyone thinks that type of “healthy living” makes you a better person or even a healthier one.
Don’t analyze what’s on your friend’s plate and criticize them for choosing to eat what you choose not to eat. One of my vegetarian friends does that to me and it puts me off my nice nutritionally balanced dinner.
Don’t collect unfinished vitamin and mineral bottles. They clutter up the pantry, lose potency and get stale. Throw them out. Your family will thank you.
Throw away those stale and foul tasting low cal/low carb desserts you’ll never eat again. They’re not going to taste any better than they do now and someone in your household may eat them by mistake. I know, I’ve been there.
Live Well
There are many admirable qualities in being a Health Freak so don't think I'm picking on you if you qualify. You're most likely loaded with energy and commitment and have a high level of integrity. You're also probably strong or shapely or both, but if you're ready for an easier route to good health or if you're simply striving to become nutritionally normal and sensibly in shape, remember to think Moderation, Mobility, Meditation…and Laughter. It’s your life. Enjoy yourself!

Great hub Green Lotus. Our food and way of life has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. The food does not have the nutritional value it once had and we spend way to much time on our butts.
It is easy to get sucked into Marketing techniques to buy this and that, and we need this and that. I don't see gardens like I used to. I would still be raiding them at 54.lol
This is a great hub. It covers many aspects of health and not only food, I'm agree our daily routine relate to our health too.
The 3M's (your principles not the company) are spot on GL. People need to experiment to see what works for them. There's no quick fix and you don't need to torture yourself. Wellness is about feeling good and enjoying life. Wise words, GL. :) Very enjoyable!
Exactly, Green Lotus. I couldn't have put it better my own self. Best not to be overly obsessed about every little health issue. You do need to be motivated though..your health needs to mean something to you. It's way too easy to fall back on bad habits, if you're not careful.
I like this "Intelligent" hub, lots of eating advice these days is just not intelligent or healthy lol Thank you
Namaste
Linda at UNIVERSAL LAWS
Hehe, GL, majority of people or do nothing about their health or do " too much " and forget to enjoy the life, so what is the point of "being healthy" if there is no enjoyment, only obsession? In addition to that, people obsessed by health so often imagine symptoms of diseases they actually do not exist, because they expect that they have to be full of vital energy 365 days per year, 16-24 hours per day, LOL...
I enjoyed every word of your Hub.
The same as you, I vote for moderation...and meditation.
Thank you for excellent article.
Great hub! It's always wise to address any issue with common sense and (drum riff please) MODERATION!
Green Lotus- Fabulous article........... moderation is the key. I refuse to make myself crazy over anything.......... not in this life! ;-)
I don't buy supplements........... I eat the fry if I want it........... exercise is a long, relaxing walk, and diet is cutting back when the jeans feel snug! It's not the size....... it's the refusal to HAVE to buy new clothes.
Thank you for another great HUb!
Kaie
Excellent advice and awesome pictures. Your writing is wonderful! Thanks for this great hub!
There is a very narrow line between being a "health freak" and being a hypochondriac with multiple imaginary physical ailments.
At one point I gave lectures to medical students and discovered that some of them invariably thought they were suffering from a particular physical ailment every time they entered a new specialty and learned the presenting symptoms.
Your "moderation" comments struck a nerve for me. My dad always used to say, "Moderation in everything." Just like you, GL, he was right.
Excellent hub rated up.
Great hub. Congratulations on your win.
Wow! This hub is amazing! Two thumbs up for you, Green Lotus! Congratulations on your win!
Good job Green Lotus. I like your approach to this topic. We share similar views on ways to be healthy too. Your photos and your video were excellent and relevant to the topic.
I'm not a "health freak", but I'm a "health nut". I take vitamins, supplements, and anti-oxidants. I try to eat correct and exercise too (but am flexible about it).
What a wonderful hub Green Lotus!
I am no health freak at all but I could do some more exercises. I spend too much time in front of the computer - writing hubs and comments. Ha ha ha!
I wrote hubs on laughter and sleep before. Check them out. Maybe we could link up? What do you think?
Great nutrition tips, and great advice, Green Lotus! Congratulations on your daily win....
Kudos on your winning hub - I like your graphics! and the info is very useful.
Wonderful Green - well done! Life is about moderation and balance! Another classic hub by a great hubber! :)
p.s. one of your links has page not working. 10 common medications that rob your body of essential nutrients (and how to protect yourself). Hope that has helped x
Fantastic hub! I love the M's, moderation, mental, mobility great balance.
What an amazing hub! I love how you presented it...moderation, mobility and mindfulness! :) Great and wonderful tips Green Lotus!
Great Hub with great information. It gives one the encentive to work at good health.
Linda
Very helpful hub that's well-researched and well-written. I was going to write one hub on "Moderation" as the overriding health rule (didn't manage to with time running out on the health contest) but you've done a fabulous job. Thoroughly enjoyed the read and rated it up:)
very nice advice GL! there needs to be balance in all life.
we can do our best and remember that a happy attitude is very healthy! cheers! :]
Ren and Stimpy? (points to the comment above) :)
Anyway, I love the layout of the hub. It's fun, hip, and best of all...it's informative. I enjoyed the video and even laughed a few times! I'll definitely try to remember the 3 Ms: Moderation, Mobility, and Mindfulness.
Oh and congrats on the hub of the day win!!
Some awesome content on this page, I'm following you now!
Great information! Thank you for a very educational hub.
Sorry being the LAST to comment, Green Lotus! I try to walk every day, even if it's for a half an hour, as it's a part of my own exercise regiment. I find it funny that some people that drive to the gym when it's only a mile away, haha. I guess that they do so to save time rather than gas. I used to be in such better shape than I am now (more like a rectangular shape rather than a circle, haha). Reading this has inspired me to get back to being just that. The great thing is that we really don't have to try when we get into a habit of doing it.
I like the advice you gave about NOT being too conscientious about the numbers game. I know people who are like, "Yeah, dammit, I'll eat a donut. But now I'll have to walk an extra hour to burn it off!" I'd hate to live like that...
Although I'm dating a vegetarian, it doesn't at all bother her that I choose to eat meat. It only bothers me that I do when I'm sitting in front of her :D
Sorry for being the very last to comment.:)
I can see why you won, actually it's a very, very good hub full of intelligent advices. So that it's rated up and stumbled. Well done GL.:)
great Hub with great information
Live well, I try my friend I try! I can think of at least one person that this article would be even more poignant for but he would probably be insulted if I told him, haha. I like your advice for people here though, take everything with a grain of salt, and don't over analyze the ingredients of the salt, exactly how much you take all the time, etc. Well thought out article!
my health is a freak for the hubs of Green Lotus!!!
Okay...I know I already commented (although I had forgotten and I re-read it anyway :P). And it's still awesome, Green!
I have a question about bad sleeping habits...what if you don't have a certain schedule, where you sleep at night one day and then sleep during the day the next, but you still get your 6-8 hours of sleep? Is that healthy or does your body need a set schedule?
This is a good hub.
I know people who get so carried away with fitness that it becomes an obsession. They seem to think if you're not killing yourself with brutal workouts and eating everything just right, that you may as well give up!
I try to convince them that there is a happy medium.
Exercise and fitness after all, should be something we can enjoy.
ugh I like how USA has the most obese people on earth, yet there are so many health freaks here too. How ironic, ahahaha.
brilliant hub, i really think im a health freak i love to always make sure im healthy and fit. i always look at the new pills out and everything.
Moderation, mobility and mindfulness. I will definitely keep those things in mind. I am not a health freak, but that would help me stay healthy. Being too much of a health freak is not good. I have nothing against vegetarians. If people choose to be one, I would not hold it against them. But some vegetables would not give you the same amount of energy that a meat can give you. You just need to find the right balance with the food that you eat. Be responsible with what you eat.
This was amazing. I've been somewhat obsessesed recently on living every aspect of my life healthy. But now I realize it's about balance and moderation....thanks.
I do agree that we intuitively know what's best. And no problemo. Keep up the awesome hubs!
Moderation for health freaks is good, but, it doesn't mean that advanced methods of nutrition and training to grow taller with dietary-supplements don't exist OK. I can't totally agree with you. Beautiful Hub whatsoever.
A great hub. One vote up.
Great hub on all the aspects of health!
Nice hub! I'm a nutritionist and people expect me to be a health freak but I am a firm believer of nourishing the spirit too! I agree that exercise (eg.yoga) is so important to strike the balance right.Voted up...
Outstanding! Moderation in all things works nicely for me. Anytime, I overdue, or if I neglect my body, it has a way of letting me know. Then I have to pay the price. This is especially true as I age. I am my own worst enemy because my mind really thinks I can still go like I did at 21. Not!
Thanks, dear Hillary for this wonderful and timely hub. Love it! Voted up and more.
this hub is grat, a lot of useful information
